Now is a great time to fertilize new or young trees and shrubs. On established plantings, a light maintenance feeding may be in order to maintain health. Weaker growth or yellowing leaves may signal the need for a special fertilization containing higher amounts of trace elements. Poor drainage may need corrected or a possible insect or disease may be present. Be sure to feed your plants to maintain optimum health.

Use 2 lbs of a complete fertilizer such as 5-10-5 for each inch of trunk diameter measured about 3 feet from the ground. ( A 1-lb coffee can holds about 2 lbs of fertilizer).

To apply the fertilizer: with a spud bar or drill, place holes about 15 inches deep, 18 to 24 inches apart around the drip line (outer tips of branches) of the tree; distribute fertilizer among holes being sure not to let the fertilizer closer than about 6 inches from the top. Otherwise you could burn your turf or promote a circle of green rings around your tree. Then fill holes with good soil. ( A mixture of topsoil, sand and peat moss is good; it provides aeration and water access). Or, if the tree is within a large mulched bed, scatter fertilizer on the ground. Begin at the drip line and work toward the trunk.

To achieve a more compact and dense growth on evergreens such as pine, spruce and firs, pinch out half the new growth (candles) on the side branches. Do not pinch off any new growth on the central leader.

Look for pests such as young aphids and scales which emerge during the onset of warm weather

Aphids are whitish, greenish or blackish plant lice not over 1/8 inch long. They suck juices from the leaves of plants. Many of the aphids secrete a "honeydew" that draws ants. A sooty mold develops on this s ticky mass, giving the foliage and other materials it covers a blackened appearance.

Scales, usually less than ¼ inch long, may be found on any part of the tree. They also exude honeydew on bark and other parts of the trees that attract other insects.

Fertilize perennials and remove dead or damaged material from around the plants.

Maintaining the health of your plants will keep your home and business looking its best. Your plants will reward you with increased beauty, functionality and value. You can always call the professionals at Buck & Sons to help you maintain the value of your outdoor investments.
